Couples Therapy
Almost all of our practitioners provide couples therapy. Regardless of how long you've been together, we can help you and your partner. We'll provide a safe environment in which both of you can feel validated.
We use a variety of approaches to couples work including psychodynamic, family systems, and cognitive behavioral. We'll help you identify emotional triggers from childhood that may be distorting how you relate to one another. You'll learn to distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate emotional expression and to differentiate between reasonable and unreasonable expectations. Drawing on the work of John Gottman, we help couples improve the ratio of favorable to unfavorable interactions between them, building up positive emotional reserves to help carry them through rough times. Using David Schnarch's approach, we help couples who struggle with sexual desire discrepancies. We understand these discrepancies as being part of the normal evolution of relationships and work with couples to understand their source and promote change. We help couples with addiction problems, excessive jealousy, financial conflicts, and recovery from affairs. Couple members learn to take responsibility for their own actions and to increase empathy for one another.
